So i've been posting some stuff lately linking to many different sites, but never quite talked about this problem.
I'm owner of an iMac, early 2006 model 17'' etc, whose serial number happens to be W860 U2N. Mine is a 1 year 9 months old machine i'm still paying for which happens to have developed quite some disgusting vertical permanent lines on the LCD.
I had my first line on October 26th, that is 1 year 6 months since i bought it, or simply six months since i was uncovered by warranty. Of all possible places it appeared just 5mm to the right of the iSight, that's practically in the middle of the screen.
Second line popped on December 5th, 40 days since the first one. This one divided my right side of the screen in to halves.
On December 21st my mac was in the mood for a new line. 16 days to draw a new one in between the first two.
My last one -but sadly not least one- is dated December 26th. This time it came to mess on my right side of the mac; close to the center but it could have annoyed somewhat less if it showed in between some other lines.
All lines are visible under dark colors and don't show at all when color is white (but they are there even if you can't see them).
So when I was blessed with this lines, i was quoted as so many other people around the links in this page, charges at around 700€. Simply, WOW.
Just how much is that? 700€ is 58% of a new iMac these days.
What's even interesting is this this analisys by iSuppli also quoted on AppleInsider which reveals
Apple Computer Inc.'s first desktop PC to be based on an Intel Corp.-manufactured microprocessor carries a Bill of Materials (BOM) cost of $873, according to preliminary data from iSuppli Corp.'s Teardown Analysis Service..
If this speculative Bill of materials were to be true, a 700€ (not messing with dollar-euro currency here) repair would mean an 80% of an original iMac.
But if this is not enough fun for the reader, how about knowing Aluminium iMacs, the current model, has aswell plenty of complaints over Apple Discussions Board and different places such as Macrumors forums?
Fixing my mac would cost let's say 700€.
Apple's mini-DVI to VGA adaptor costs 19€.
Attaching an external monitor would cost at around 200€.
What about that?
Update: 5th line January 6th... 11 days since the last one. Can't say I didn't expect it.

Hello
It's good that you've set up this blog cause apple for some reason (bad publicity, what else) is locking the discussions about this problem on support forums. There is nearly 300 names under the online petition, and i suppose that this is only the beginig of some bigger engineering failure of apple, or their LCD supplier.
My problem is that i have 4 lines on my imac screen now, and $700 repair, or a new computer is not an option for me, simply because i haven't enough money for this now (especially when it is clear that this is some engineering failure). I really count on apple extending their repair program, and this probably won't happen without some publicity ...
Hi, thanks for passing by. I'm glad this blog was useful for at least one person. Sadly not useful enough to get rid of the lines, but to inform of the petiton, the different posts on apple...
It happened to my iMac 17" 1st time on November and after 2 vertical lines, the LCD was replaced (at no cost thanks to Apple Care program). Today, Jan 8th, the new LCD popped another cyan vertical line, in the exact same place of the previous one.
Time for another AppleCare call...
wow.
i have my iMac the same time as you, and two days ago, i got my first vertical line. the morning after, i booted the iMac again, and onther one few centimaters to the right of the first one. :-(
i'm from israel, i payed more then 2000 usd for it, and now i'm f*ed.
I am also in the same position. My 17" iMac (purchased Feb 06 - same serial number) has just come down with its first pink line. I can only hope that Apple will come up with a solution. Our house has a MacBook, 3 iPods and an iMac - seems reasonable for Apple to come to my rescue - I've been such a responsible Apple consumer...
Hi I have the same problem. Here is a way to sort it out if you live in the UK! Contact the office of fair trading- they will tell you your rights, and you have to contact the store which you brought your mac from by registered letter. This is explained on the website! Call th OFT and get a reference number and then you can threaten to take the store to the small claims court if they do not replace or repair the mac. The more people that do this the more Apple will have to take note of it! DO IT NOW! It doesnt cost you anything even if does go to court, doubtless the case will go in your favour because the more cases of this appearing the more high profile it will become and the company will have to take the burden of expenses. I called them and have sent my registered letter today. Perhaps if Apple UK are forced to accept there is a problem then Apple US will register it to and do an extended warantee on all 17" imacs.
Hi,
I´bought my iMac 17 in April 2006, at the moment its got 8 lines, most yellow. I called apple but they are not interested as its over the warranty date. The shop where I bought the thing are also not interested. So i´ve bought a good Samsung 22" the iMac monitor has got a black solid background and stuck awyay out of sight. If you arrange the iMac monitor above the new monitor, you can pull the toolbar down onto the other screen.
gaahhhh...
I was about to eBay my iMac G5 1.9 w iSight to fund the purchase of a new MacBook... and a green line appeared... and within a week I have a total of 4!
At £500 a pop to replace the screen I might as well stick the iMac in the bin!!!!!
But seriously.... its not even like I have a choice... really... what am I gonna do?... buy a PC?? dont make me laugh... I am gonna be buying a new Mac very soon..... god I feel used.
Hi All,
mine too.. is only 15months old, suddently the vertical blue thin appear, i try restarting many times but it is still appear.. i feel cheated! i am a mac user since year 2000, and own the first generation ibook, and 15months ago decide to get the IMAC, and never get an apple care, and was thinking to buy the new macbook pro soon, and now reading so many complains over the same issue.. i am wondring will apple do something to get this hard ware problem fix.
Hey everyone.. It feels so good to know that at least, I am not alone... I purchased my iMac November 2006, which makes my iMac 17 months old, and, yes, the annoying thin blue line has appeared on my display too, just below the left-side edge of my iSight.. Sigh...
Just like everyone else, I am still thinking of a solution to this problem.. The best thing to do probably is to wait, until Apple resolves this glitch.
And oh, just like the latest post here, I was just about to sell my iMac, wanting to purchase a macbook, and, lo and behold, the effin blue line has appeared. Arrggh...
Sigh sigh sigh...
Hello,
One cyan vertical line appeared on May 4th, 2008 ... 17" iMac G5 "iSight" 2.4 years old ... Very Disappointed ...
Yes, me too. I got my first vertical line, a lovely shade of lavendar last week and the computer will shut off for no reason. I am taking it into the Apple store and am curious to see if the iMac G5 Repair Extension Program for Video and Power Issues will cover it, especially since the serial number falls into the ranges mentioned. I bought my iMac in November 2005, so it took 2 1/2 years for the problem to show up. I will try to update with any news.
you poor ppl. i feel very sorry for you all because you keep buying them. this has been a known issue since the very first G series processors. The screen is not the main issue. the motherboard is shorting out and the onboard video card is the main culpret. once the video card shorts out it causes unusuable signals to the screen which in tern starts to burn out capacitors. apple knows of these issues and they refuse to repair them, because they know loyal apple customers will keep coming back despite the problems. being a X apple repair employee we were trained to have the customer live with the issue and just recommend them replace their computer insted of apple taking the responsibility. these computers are made with very cheep parts actually cheeper than what the pc equivelent of a Emachine. the only name brand parts in these systems are the intel based processor now. and frankly the only stable part of the system.
so just to get our numbers bigger.
I'm from israel. thought my problem was the extra heat around, but I see you falks from northeren lands share the same..
no more good words for apple until they fix that for us!
Bought Gmac in November 2006, about January 2008 coloured vertical lines appeared on the right hand side of the display, they have since covered 2/3 of the screen making it difficult to use I photo etc.
Contacted local Apple shop on phone who said to bring machine in for inspection. After driving 20kms, to the store, they told me the machine would be placed in a long repair queue (Macs are obviously not as reliable as we were led to believe) in order for them to ascertain the problem. Just to leave it in this queue which they said could be anywhere up to a week or a fortnight they asked for a payment of $90. Because this is obviously a common problem, It should be part of their competency to KNOW what the problem is and to fix it free particularly as it is a manufacturing fault which the company has knowingly sold on to us their beguiled customers. I am disgusted with attitude of Apple and it seems that many Apple should rename many of their products as they are turning out to be Lemons!
Yep, my iMac's about 2 years old and suddenly this damned pink line appeared. I might try a full system restore for the hell of it but it's so frustrating.
I can't afford a replacement right now, I have university fees to think about... so this is a nightmare.
What do I do? Try Applecare? Or just buy another monitor and use my iMac as the machine?
This seems to be a global issue with iMac. I am from Asia and has the same problem with my iMac 17" that is 1.5 yrs old. Apple quoted me an equivalent of US$700 to replace the display. The call center actually said "buy Applecare next time" and guess what, there eill not be a next time.
hi i wanted to say that buying an external display 22" or wider is an excellent solution and works wonderfully you get two screen working area (the one with the lines is for those app that dose not need close look)/
My Dad bought me my iMac in June 2007. The lines began appearing in August 2008 just after the warranty period. I now have 5 yellow lines and 2 purple ones.
I live in the Caribbean but my Mac was bought in the US. There are no Mac dealers on the island so the cost of shipping my Mac up and paying $700 for repair is not an option. I have been using Macs since the early 90's and feel cheated by Apple who is not "Man" enough to replace the iMac which has a serious manufacturing flaw.
To my mind nobody should have to pay $700 to repair a problem that is Apple's. It is unfortunate that they have chosen the LOW road.
I just googled "why does my mac have a purple line through the screen", and I am simply stunned. I didn't think much when it popped up this week, figured it would be an easy fix. After ready somewhere around 60 blog posts I am realizing I was sadly mistaken, and what I thought was a good investment in trust worthy product may have been a mistake. I am in the U.S. and will try and contact my local apple store tomorrow, see if I have any luck. My husband doesn't seem convinced we should shop pc next time, but at 1/2 the price and 1/2 the drama, why not!?
Add me to the list of Vertical line Imacs.
I am in South Africa and not sure what to do.
I just bought a 24'' iMac yesterday... and well, I just now got a purple line running on the right side of my screen about 3'' from the center. It is just a vertical line of a lavender color.. this is ridiculous.
I'm also in South Africa, with a nice new yellow stripe on my 17 inch Intel iMac. I really hope that Apple has a recall on these, because with the exchange rate the way it is now, it will cost me a small fortune to fix. Rather buy a new computer.
Add me, my first line was on the right side of the screen. That was 5 days ago. Suddenly today a new line has appeared on the left side. Very annoying to say the least.
I'm with you, it's really annoying, but hey! The sooner you call, the less you suffer! Good luck
My early 2006 Intel iMAC (17" screen) now has a thin yellow line from top to bottom... and having trawled the internet I see that (1) it is clearly a BIG problem, and (2) it will probably get worse.
The ridiculous cost of repairs is something I have previously experienced from Sony 7 years ago when my Vaio laptop developed a screen fault and they wanted more money to fix it than it actually cost!!
I am sure the high repair costs are Apple's way of saying "go away..I'm not interested in you"!
Oh it is so sad but I am qualified to join the club here! I just got my third line yesterday, now I do have one yellow and two blue lines :(
I'm in Germany and bought my refurbished iMac two years ago.
Thanks Boaz , I took up your suggestion, bought a Samsung monitor and plugged it into my mac-cost about $AUD250.
My Mac continues to collect more vertical lines , but it's not a problem as I can now see the screen perfectly on the monitor placed in front of the cruddy Mac.
My 17" iMac is also developing stripes. There are around 20 of them now or various colours, but all concentrated on the left hand quarter of the screen.
I was wondering wether it was the graphics card that was the problem. Does anyone know if it is possible to self-replace the card?
Dear Rachel,
please read my comment( the one above yours)
This is the only cheap solution I have found so far.
Hi
My Imac (2006) started getting the stripes two months ago - I now have four - last three appeared after Christmas. I love Apple but will never buy a computer with an integrated screen again!
I live in South Africa replacing the screen cost basically the same as a new screen. Apple = Quality I don't think so anymore!
for APPLE read LEMON!
I have a 17" imac purchased in August 2006. About December 2007, when my imac was out of warranty, i started getting vertical lines of various colors. Today I have about 100 lines on my monitor. I have read the blogs and know Apple will do nothing to correct their malfunction and will continue to pack their stores with customers with fancy marketing strategies and some really neat gadgetry. Last week I stopped by the Apple store and got a quote to correct the problem, (replace the LCD monitor) for approximately $700.
No thanks! Looks like the financial solution will be a new Samsung monitor.
Pink line appeared today, after two and a half years of very light use (mostly e-mail, web and word processing), in an iMac 17" 1.83 (early 2006). Sn W8605JHYU2N. Made in Shanghai, China, and sold in Spain (Europe).
Not happy at all with Apple quality fpr a product that costed more than 1000 euros.
Hi, i have the same problem with my early 2006 iMac. First and only line appeared 10 days ago then after few days little squares all over it so that i couldn't access anything on the desktop. Then i couldn't even log in since the squares started to appear when the logo shows and cause the computer to freeze. Meanwhile i started to search on the web for discussion about the problem and felt very disappointed to find that involves a lot of imac owners. I anyway booked an appointment with the Genius Bar in Regent Street in London and to my surprise, after reading all the blogs, they said that they are going to replace my LCD monitor cost free with no apple care. Now, fingers crossed, i only hope that's the real problem and nothing else.
Hi I already posted my problem here. after reading those encouraging comments to go and try apple service again, I want and tried. tell you the truth it was worse than the first time (900$). it was strictly NO, and so i am wondering if those comments are true, or is someone from apple PR is bullshitting us, to keep the fire low. I say let's all find a way to sue the motherfuckers together. and yes I am not afraid, my name is boaz agmon and my serial number is: W86059SWU2N. i say let us all come forward, yes we know that they can find ways to hurt us but we can also fight back. so let's find someone who can file a law suit for all of us together.
wow! i just left my imac (early 2006) in the store for exactly the same issue. so far i had one and luckily for me, i purchased the extended warranty. but it seems that this is a well-known issue that apple should really look at.
well its good to know I'm not alone I suppose my one inch vertical white line appeared today the 6th feb 09 and the IMac G4 desktop computer was bought in November 06 in Australia. it is depressing to see that Apple will not rectify what is clearly a hardware problem of this 2006 batch manufacturing and we all have to suffer. I'm going back to my pc!
Got my imac in July 2007. First vertical lines - pink, green, blue, white, grey - started appearing late 2008 on the left side. And just now, there was a flicker and that entire area turned solid black! The rest of the screen became very pixellated - I can hardly see what I'm typing and have to select the entire window to read your post and the comments =(
My pink line showed up a couple of months ago. 17" Imac less than two years old.
ARGH.... Blue Line appeared last week. 17 inch iMac, Serial W8... The fundamental question becomes what can we do to get Apple to recognized this.
is there an class action suit attorney that can represent us for merchantability fit for use law suit? what about the news stations, can we call them?
by the way has all of you signed the petition? if not go and do that' and leave your name otherwise they say this all thing is a fake done by an angry customer and the problem is not really that wide. it's a fact that anyone who had this serial number got affected!
I purchased my imac 20" less than two weeks ago and tonight, a bright pink line appeared on the left side of the screen. It went away eventually, but I am not encouraged by what I am reading here. I have until the weekend to exchange it and I think I may do that, as much of a hassle it is to remove and re-install all the software.
W8748 Serial....20" iMac purchased 18 mos ago thankfully on AppleCare. HD failure 3 mos ago and took 3 weeks to fix!! Then brought it home and now have green line near left side from top to bottom. Is there really a petition? Anyone have recourse we can follow? I was livid when told by Apple that to bring it in to fix it will still take another 2 weeks!! AppleCare SchmappleCare!!! If it is true that it is the mother board, what's the point of exchanging the monitor?? I thought it was the graphic card too...but Apple said they'd have to look at it!! They know exactly what the problem is!! I'm with all of you. I thought I could trust Apple. That's why I spent the EXTRA money purchasing a very special computer!!! HELP!!!

I have mine in the shop now for a vertical green line that appeared, I will certainly question the motherboard problem associated with this problem. I always have liked how trouble free my imac 20" 2.16ghz
early 2007 has been, but have said that my opinion for sure will depend upon durability. I could not agree more with the people who feel cheated after spending extra for better and getting less. I can see myself going back to pc and telling everyone not to waste the money
Hello
I'm thinking of taking the LCD out of the imac and freeze it in the freezer for a day. Then we'll see what's going to happen. Since I went to iStudio (Mac Store in Thailand) and they said it cost me 4-5 hundreds dollar. And I'll do this tonight.
I am from South Africa and my iMac developed its first cyan line yesterday.. I cannot afford a fix and I need it for work!!
Same problem, here in Tokyo, iMac 17" W8 bought less than two years ago. Purple vertical line comes and goes. Dismal lack of support from Apple. Fifteen years loyal customer, ready to look for a company that stands behind their product rather than dances off to the bank. Disrespect.
Hi I am from Trinidad and Tobago and I now have a vertical lavender line on my computer screen. I have a 17 inch iMac and I bought it in June/July 2007 to help with my studies. This is crazy, it just appeared, and I don't know what to do. I did not know that so many people have this problem, then this is NOT our fault, it is Apple's fault.SMH! What can I do?
same problem here! i bought my iMac early 2006. the first vertical stripes appeared last night.. i dono what to do! there is no official Apple stores here in Maldives to even complain+ the warranty is over:(
Is it part of planned obsolescence?
Hi folks,
I have the same problem, first one yellow line appeared a couple of months ago and another yellow line last week, yesterday I watched a cyan one go down the screen . I was contemplating replacing my imac intel core 2 duo with a spanking new aluminum one till I read the woes on this site, so now I will just buy a new monitor, I have a cable on the way, I still prefer apple though, fast and efficient, so maybe a mac mini next time. See how a new monitor goes.I was searching for the best solution.Thought it might be to replace the monitor. Disappointing thought.
Thanks to all that contributed to this site.
As of July 2009 Apple is still picking up the bill for replacing whatever it was that caused the pink and green lines on the monitor. I called Apple and had no problem. They were forward in saying that the repair would be on them. I picked mine up after 3 days and didn't pay a thing.
can you tell us who you are and where are you from because up to date in ISRAEL you get nothing from apple. they charge 800$ US for fixing the damn thing! hell they charged me 120$ just to get an offer of how much will it be to fix it! I do not buy that thing that in some places they fix it for free.
here are my details: boaz agmon kibbutz ghm 38930 israel (boaz.agmon@gmail.com)
Why don't you give us yours.
I just dropped in to tell you my results. I am in Alabama, USA. I'm sorry for all of you that aren't getting any help. I even emailed apple to thank them. I wish all of you the best of luck.
My Mac from November 2005 has just started doing the stripy blue pixel thing!! I checked with the local Apple fixing store and they say my serial number doesn't come under any extended cover. Maybe I'm being silly thinking that a £1000 computer should last more than 3.5 years...
I'm going to check out the new monitor option I think and be a bit quieter on the pro Mac front in future...
Well this wrapped up my decision to buy non Apple, the built in shelf life! We are buying a monitor to replace the imac and run our laptop through it. Acer LG or HP but not APPLE!
I'm the latest victim! iMac (W8* serial number). iMac purchased 3 yrs ago. Very dissatisfied that Apple will not acknowledge the issue. I live in the UK so may try the Office of Fair Trading approach!
Same problem in Cape Town, South Africa... Apple told me it would cost between $500 and $700 as it was either the logic board or LCD, and passed me on to a third party that does logic board repairs instead of apple's replacement.
As soon as the 3rd party heard that it was the iMac with the camera on it, they confirmed it was an LCD problem and could not be repaired. Apple is aware of it, but because it is less than 5% of this product, it will not be recall...
Last Mac I buy - even had another two people buy one I was such a pleased customer at the time, not again...
Same problem here... W8704* Mac agreed to replace the screen (after a long fight with about 12 different people on the phone) Got my new screen... 1 month later, new line. WTF?

Hi. Just wanted to say I had the line problem on my 17" imac. Started about 4 months ago and I got up to 20 lines. Read the stories and didn't think I had many options but to buy a new monitor, but I made an appointment with the Apple Store anyway. Well when I took it in, he checked my serial number (W860...) and said Apple would fix it, no charge. Three days later new monitor installed! I was completely stoked and hope everyone finds same results.
OK smart guy, please tell us your name, where you live, and the address of the apple store that fixed your monitor (plz include full serial no.) so we, the less fortunate may use that information, when we go to apple. last time i went there, i payed 100$ just for the information that it would cost me 800$ to fix the same problem you described...
OK GUYS! ITS PAYBACK TIME!

I just called Apple about the yellow vertical stripe that appeared on my March 2007 Intel iMac yesterday. I told them about the numerous posts I've read here, that a Customer Satisfaction Number exists, and that my Apple Care ran out last month.
Without any argument I was passed to a senior consultant who has given me an Exception Number to take to a Mac repair shop for a FREE repair, or replacement! I'm in Sydney, Australia. My serial number starts with W8649. Australian Mac owners - it's worth trying. We'll see whether my Mac is really repaired, or replaced...
man i wish they would fix your machine! you deserve it. i wasn't so lucky. i phoned more times then i can remember, i went to apple lab. 2 times payed 100$ each time for "technician hour" payed another 70$ for fuel, and nearly lost my mind. i got 2 offers for repairing my imac. one for 900$, second for 1800$.
I confess that in the end, i cried.
I hope you will have it easier, I think you'll find it comforting to watch a funny video i made on that story:

I just got off the phone with apple support and they are going to fix my iMac free of charge. I live in Perth Western Australia and have a well out of warranty iMac with a W8604 serial. I just noticed a yellow line this morning. I first called my local apple store/repair centre who wanted to charge me $75 to even look at it but thanks to the information in this blog I could tell them I wasn't going to pay any money for a problem which seems to be caused by apples manufacturing. They then told me to call apple support who after making me go through a few simple tests gave me a number to have to my local repair shop fix it at no charge.
Thanks to all those who have complained about this problem, apple seem to be taking it seriously now (at least in Australia). In the end apple support was very helpful and easy to deal with. After reading other people's experiences I was expecting to have to at least argue with them.
I guess we've just had our membership stripe,,, Our Imac G5 with iSight just got its 2 stripes, first was a yellow and now a pink one. it took 4 years. We are from Norway so I guess this flaw on the Imac is international.
I bought a 2010 model and no help from Mac so I smashed the comp up and dumped it at their store. Fuckin arseholes with their seductive, shiny products.. why not spend some more time actually making the comps work?? Instead of being concerned about fan noise and making them spin slowly but that makes components eat up.. MIne also had the crackly sound too. I am going back to PCs!!!
pc is not as good i admit but i bought it too after that case with the i mac. i got a furious machine for half the price. got it silenced for another 200$. im good!
